Haverfordwest farmers’ market has held its position as one of the best rural markets in the whole of the UK.

The market has come runner up in the National Farmers’ Market of the Year 2009 competition, run by the National Farmers Retail and Markets’ Association (FARMA).

Haverfordwest was one of only four UK markets to make the shortlist for the certified rural farmers’ market category, having previously won the category in 2006 The judges felt that Haverfordwest was a showcase for the best fresh produce from the diverse landscape of Pembrokeshire.

They commended it for its excellent food, friendly producers, lively atmosphere, an awareness of environmental issues, and a commitment to the local community. "This thriving market is a pleasure to visit," said Sue Thomson, Quality Standards Manager at FARMA. "It draws together the best the region can offer, from the hilltops to the coastline, to provide a vast range of delicious local produce."

Kate Morgan, market manager and Food Officer for Pembrokeshire County Council, welcomed the award, saying: “We are all proud to maintain the quality of a true farmers’ market.”
